I still don’t like talking about Wembley in 1971.
We were sitting near the tunnel as Alex Murphy was stretchered off after Syd Hynes had supposedly flattened him and he looked like he was to all intents and purpose dead.
As he passed us he most definitely turned and winked at the crowd before jumping off and returning to the field, where he orchestrated Leigh’s win.
I have hated him ever since that moment. Sport is all about having icons you adore and characters you despise and he is still top of my list, even though it was nearly thirty years ago!

Comment added by Pat Haddigan: I think your bitterness has clouded your memory, Sue. I don't know whether AJM winked at the crowd or not, but he certainly did not jump off the stretcher and return to the field to orchestrate Leigh's win. He went off for good and only returned after the final whistle to collect the cup. He was still groggy then and nearly fell down the steps carrying the cup.– PAT HADDIGAN, JUNE 10 2013 AT 09:19
