Geoff Caplan, Headingley Rugby Voices: the Challenge Cup Final experience

We went on a family outing to Wembley by train the day before the final and stayed overnight at the Waldorf Hotel.

I can remember walking into this huge foyer, the like of which I’d never seen before, with a rattle and running round the lounge spinning it for all I was worth - which led to an almighty telling off.

The morning of the match we went to Regent’s Park Zoo, which was another eye-opener, and then took the tube to the Empire Stadium. The sight was amazing and overpowering, and that sensation has lived with me longer than the details of the game which we lost causing me to cry my eyes out.

A couple of weeks later we played Bradford again, this time at Headingley, when the official record attendance was set. The old ground was overflowing and the pain of Wembley was soon forgotten.
