Being a Leeds fan, Headingley Rugby Voices

I can't watch Leeds when they're on the telly. If they go behind I haven't got the guts to stay in the room and see if they can get back into the game. If you're there you can get more of a feel for how they're playing or what is happening outside the narrow picture. It's too easy when you're at home just to go into another room or out in the garden and brood. You feel as though you can't help in any way when you are so isolated and I just hate it when they lose. Jim Munden

My whole family follows rugby league but, having been born and brought up in the South, I have to confess that it isn’t my first love. I’ve been to a few matches, mainly at Headingley during the traditional holiday period, but more often than not the team has lost and so it has been my fault! The same is true when the rest of them watch Leeds play on the television. Whenever I am in the room they seem to be behind so I get banished to the kitchen until the final whistle so as not put the mockers on them. Sara Steele

I’ve always had ‘lucky shirts’, the only problem is we kept losing in finals and semis so I had to keep changing them or buying new ones. At the last count I had four or five and I keep rotating them until we lose and then revert back to one of the others. Somehow they seem luckier when I’m watching Leeds on the telly rather than at the matches and recently I’ve ended up sticking to a Great Britain shirt, which seems strange. Andy Cave

I've always said that a good bit of rugby, like some clever inter-passing, is equal to a beautiful picture, a piece of music or a poem and that the men who conjure them up are true artists. I've moved heaven and earth to watch a match, I won't miss. There's a whole crowd of us who go together and they're all as daft as I am. Ruth Walker
