Tracey Collins, Headingley Rugby Voices: 1982 Challenge Cup semi-final

It was so crowded near the dug outs at Swinton for the 1982 Challenge Cup semi-final against Widnes that I ended up sitting on top of it because it was the only way I could see.

Leeds were within one play of going to Wembley- which would have been my first- and we were all getting ready to run on to the pitch and celebrate.

I was in the process of congratulating Ian Wilkinson who had come off with quarter of an hour or so left when Mick Adams put up his fateful kick that bounced off the crossbar and into the hands of a team-mate who scored.

I don’t know who cried more, me or him but both of us were inconsolable.

In the 1982 semi-final at Swinton against Widnes Leeds were one play away from the Final when a Widnes kick bounced back off their cross-bar and into the hands of Widnes' Keiron O'Loughlin, who had the easy task of scoring the try and sending Widnes through to Wembley.
