Ken Fawcett, Headingley Rugby Voices: drinking from the Challenge Cup

When the Rhinos brought back the Challenge Cup for the homecoming at Headingley, I suddenly recalled a story my dad had told me, as I waited for the present day players to come out on to the pitch.

After Leeds had first won at Wembley in 1936 they loaned the cup out to local businesses so the fans could see it in all its glory and it used to rest on display in shop windows around the area.

Near where my dad lived, it sat proudly in the butchers for a while and he used to sprint home from school every afternoon just so he could have a look at the coveted silverware. Soon afterwards, the butcher invited him in not only to touch the trophy but also allowed him to have a drink out of it.

Because he was only a child there was no chance of anything alcoholic to commemorate the historic victory, so he had to settle for dandelion and burdock.
