When I was nine I went to the 1988 Yorkshire Cup final and was completely bored by the proceedings.
My dad was Lord Mayor at the time and he was presented to the teams and my cousin Chris was the Castleford mascot.
I sat in the directors’ box reading a book the whole time except for looking up when Schoey and Gibbo scored their long range interception tries for Leeds.
I didn’t become a fanatic until a couple of years afterwards but I regret not taking more of an interest in that game, especially when I went to school on the Monday and everyone was talking about what a great match it had been and how privileged I was to have seen it from such a good vantage point.
