Garry Morrell, Headingley Rugby Voices: the switch to summer Rugby

At the time of the big switch to summer with the advent of Super League, I thought that the game would be irrevocably changed.

I guess I wasn’t really in favour of the move because I hadn’t known any different and all my habits and rituals centred around the winter months. Looking back now I realise that the only thing I miss is that indescribable feeling of rushing back from Headingley to get warm in front of the fire and drinking soup or hot chocolate as we mulled over the game and felt our and knees tingling and coming back to life. Because we had suffered hardship on the terraces battling the biting wind or the driving rain, we felt that we had played a part in the afternoon’s efforts.

It wasn’t only the players that had been put out, we had made our sacrifice and contribution alongside them. My mum, or whoever, would always have the kettle or saucepan on, waiting for our arrival like we had been on some Arctic expedition and the coats were dumped in the hall in the rush to get the waiting mugs.
