Just opposite the Skyrack pub near the ground, where we always meet up before a game, there is a church.
Standing on the pavement outside sipping a pint I have often witnessed disagreements between the vicar and those going to the match, desperately trying to find parking spaces, who have tended to block his entrances which he has tried to keep free for Sunday worshippers.
Once, he was patrolling his gates in full regalia when an old Escort pulled up and about eight lads fell out of it dressed in their scarves and shirts.
The driver, who had parked almost diagonally to the pavement was just about to lock the door when the verger shouted across, ‘You can’t park there like that, this is a place of worship’. Quick as a flash, one of the gang replied, ‘No, that’s where we’re off and we’re on a mission from God’.
