In the 1930s we used to take a tram to the game.
We lived in Hamilton Avenue and got the tram from Chapeltown right round town before changing for the journey to Headingley. We got off at Hyde Park corner and then walked to the stadium. What might now be seen as inconvenience was taken for granted because the only alternative was to walk all the way there - which we did when necessary if we only had enough money to get into the ground.
We walked in crowds and used to meet our friends at a café in North Street called Jack Reeds and do the journey together. We always got the green Sports Post on the way home from the match in town on Saturday night and that afternoon’s report would already be in there, which was amazing really.
What was special was the match itself, getting there - though enjoyable - was just the means to an end.
