Howard Brooks, Headingley Rugby Voices: Lost on the way to Wigan

Wigan.....one year we went to Wigan for a midweek night match and, to avoid the heavy traffic, came round the back way off the M62.

Being unfamiliar with the route we got a bit lost and thought we would ask one of the locals the way to the ground. I was sat in the passenger seat and my dad was driving when he pulled up to the kerb, wound down the window and he leaned across to ask directions to Central Park.

The guy, who was about middle-aged and casually dressed then proceeded to talk for a couple of minutes, interspersing his words with the odd gesticulation to the left or right. When we had thought that he had finished, Dad shouted ‘Thanks’ and I wound up the window as he pulled off.

‘Get any of that?’ he said to me, ‘Not a word’ I said, to which he replied ‘No, me neither.’ It went from bad to worse after that. Soon afterwards, on the same road, we came across a small garage and popped in to ask for directions. ‘Oh you’re on the right road here’ said the attendant without batting an eyelid. Eventually after another couple of miles or so we came to Springfield Park, home of Wigan Athletic, which was completely locked and in total darkness as they weren’t playing.

Eventually we found the right ground ourselves but we did miss the kick-off.
