Andrew Jagger, Headingley Rugby Voices: a rain-soaked trip to Salford

We struggled to Salford the other year for a Friday night Sky match but we never actually got into the ground.

There had been torrential rain all day and I was hassling my dad from about 4.30 to get going but he said to leave it as late as possible to allow all the idiots off the motorway and to see if the game was on. In the end we finally set off at half-past six and fought through all kinds of weather and hold-ups to get near the Willows just before kick-off, only for GMR to announce that the match had been postponed because the pitch was waterlogged.

Even the lines and markings they had painted on had been washed away. The rain had been so heavy that we lost one of the windscreen wipers on the journey because they had been on full blast all the way and it just sheared off under the weight of water. We had to stop on the hard shoulder to try and repair it but, like the game, all to no avail.
