My daughter, Louise, was born at four o’clock in the morning on 1 January 1985. I’d been at the hospital for goodness knows how long over New Year’s Eve and I finally decided that I had better go home and have some sleep and freshen up. My wife, who was both exhausted and exhilarated asked what time I would be back so that we could share the first day of our new-born. ‘Not till after the match’, I told her, ‘I can see my daughter any time but Eric Grothe has arrived today and he’s something really special’. I was born on a match day so it's hardly surprising that I grew up as a fanatic. It was an Easter Saturday and that afternoon Leeds played Hunslet in the traditional derby fixture at Headingley, kicking off twelve hours after I had made my debut at the nursing home. Years later I asked my Dad if he went to the game. His reply was short and to the point, "What do you think?" Apparently we won 4-0. Howard Brooks
