Andrew Jagger, Headingley Rugby Voices: telling a St. Helens fan what I thought

The first time I stuck up for myself and the team was at St Helens.

I was only about twelve and John Gallagher was disgracefully spear tackled by a couple of Saints players which amazingly went unpunished by the referee but caused the Leeds full-back to be taken off. As he was led past us with a neck brace on at the tunnel end of the ground and into the dressing rooms, a home fan near me started screaming that he was useless and another Leeds waste of money and so on.

I just had to bite and ended up having a massive argument with him about them being a set of cheats. I’ve never looked back since and although the incident probably finished him as a rugby league player it was the making of me as a fan. Andrew Jagger
