Ryan Duckett, Headingley Rugby Voices: telling the Wigan fans what we thought

Unbelievably we won at Wigan in 1991 with a below strength team against their supposedly all-conquering superstars. There weren’t many Leeds fans there that night because it was on satellite TV and it was going to be a question of how many we lost by. To win was sensational - especially as John Bentley scored a magnificent length-of-the-field try - but to nil them was mind-blowing.

We made the most of it, jigging and dancing on the terraces behind the posts at the far end and understandably getting totally carried away. As we were walking out by the chip van at the top of the steps, all chuffed, this bloke with a Wigan scarf on looked over and shouted, 'Oh yeah and what have you ever won?' Quick as a flash my mate turned around, looked him in the eye and answered, 'Maybe so but at least me wife doesn't look like a muppet'.

We just howled, it seemed like the perfect remark for the occasion and has stuck in my mind ever since. We spent the entire journey home singing 'You've lost that Loving feeling' at the top of our voices in tribute to the Wigan fans.
