Leeds had scraped into the Premiership and had somehow beaten Castleford at Wheldon Road in the last minute in the first round to set up a trip to Hull. We were the underdogs and the usual Boulevard welcome meant that we were pretty quiet as we sat in the new John Smiths stand, surrounded by black and white fans who were taunting us with their cries of ‘What a waste of money’ and the like.
Unbelievably, we led going into the last minute and we were becoming a bit more boisterous ourselves at the prospect or another highly unlikely victory. I was so excited at the thought and in a state of glee grasped my husband’s arm and shouted so that everyone around us could hear, ‘I’m so excited, I’ve never been to a final before’.
At that exact moment John Gallagher fumbled a high kick near the Leeds line and Hull scored to win. Hubby just turned and looked me straight in the eye and replied, ‘And you never will, love’.
