Phil Smithson, Headingley Rugby Voices: Comedy at Castleford v. Leeds

They probably still do it at Wheldon Road, but when someone is read out on the Castleford team-sheet their name is accompanied by that of their personal sponsor.

We were there on the popular side just after they had signed Lee Crooks from us in the late eighties and the man in the microphone started off with, 'At number one...' and after every name there was a loud cheer from the home fans around us.

When they came to number eight, the announcer shouted, 'Lee Crooks, sponsored by' and before he could get the words out a huge Leeds fan at the back of the stand bellowed at the top of his voice, 'Tetley's Bitter' which had us all in stitches. Phil Smithson
