Gordon Morrish, Headingley Rugby Voices: Camaraderie at Castleford v. Leeds

I’ve always found camaraderie amongst league fans, even if they are rivals.

Only last season I went to Castleford on my own and got in the queue for the turnstiles carrying a bag of sweets in my pocket. I got one out and started eating it and there were three home fans standing in front of me.

One of them said, ‘Is tha on tha own- well come and join us then’. They were as rough and as ready as you could imagine but hearts of gold. They took me in with them and no sooner had we got settled than another of them asked, ‘Where’s them sweets then?’ to me that epitomises so much of the spirit that’s contained within the game.

They were great blokes, good to be with even though they were the opposition.
