Stuart Duffy, Headingley Rugby Voices: childhood impressions of Headingley

In the early days I used to come with my dad and sit on the wall. Headingley always felt huge. In the early sixties, when I was ten or eleven, I used to sometimes come over even when there was no match on and the ground was always open. I used to stand on the terraces and look around and think how wonderful it was. Occasionally, I used to make my way on to the pitch and pretend that I’d run round all the St Helens or Wigan team of the day or scorch up the South Stand side to score a length of the field try - it is a magic place, wonderful.

I never wanted to do anything other than stand behind the posts at the pavilion end.
