The thing that always struck me about Headingley, even as a youngster, was that it was by far the smartest ground. I used to pride myself on the fact that I had visited every other one and at most of them it meant standing on bricks. Even places like Central Park and Fartown, that had terrific history and atmosphere, when they were full didn’t have the quality of Headingley - it was the Rolls Royce of venues. Because we spent all summer across the other side watching Test, county or local league cricket, it became both literally and metaphorically our second home.
