Roger Uttley: career memories and highlights

I played rugby for England in the 1970s. I played for Gosforth in the 70s, we were pretty good and we won the John Player Cup twice in the mid 70s, so they were pretty special times.

I was a spectator for my first match at Twickenham, I was in the old North Stand, it was a bit scary as there were loads of freshman around who were waving wooden cockles around, and my wife - my girlfriend at the time - wasn't very happy so we had to leave before the final whistle, though I don't think we missed anything important.

One year when I was captain, in 1977, we got the biggest score against Scotland - biggest score up until that point, in the Calcutta Cup. Also then England won the Grand Slam and the Championship for the first time in so many years in my final year, with Billy Beaumont, Fran Cotton and Steve Smith. However, overall my favourite England rugby memories are Jonny Wilkinson's kick or Martin Johnson's captaincy over the great side!
