Tim Galsworthy: 2009 Challenge Cup Final

I have endless memories of Warrington Wolves, not all of them being good! One memory stands out though, the 2009 Challenge Cup Final- the first final the Wire had been to in my lifetime. I was 14 at the time, and went to Wembley with the whole family on a minibus. The motorway was a sea of primrose and blue, and the stadium was a wall of noise. Much of the match is a blur, yet many of things I remember very clearly.

I remember the big screen not working, and the delayed reaction to Richie Mathers' opening try. I remember our relief and surprise at Huddersfield's disallowed try. I remember Lee Briers putting over a drop-goal just so he was on the scoresheet! But two memories in particular resonate still.

The first is Vinnie Anderson's winning try. Lance Todd winner Michael Monaghan crabbed across the line and passed to Anderson, who cut through a hole in the Giants' defence and ran about ten metres to crash over. It felt like it took Steve Ganson an eternity to award the try!

But my abiding memory of August 29th 2009 is the full time whistle. Upon full time I was in a state of shock. Everyone around me was jumping up and down, I simply sat down in my seat with my hands on my head. I looked along the row of seats, my Grandad Geoffrey was doing the exact same thing.

A wonderful day, seeing primrose and blue on a trophy - something I never thought I'd see! Spending that day with my family made it even more special.
