Simon Foster: Billy Boston

A great memory was my first visit to Odsal Stadium Bradford to watch a Championship final between Wigan and Wakefield Trinity in 1960.

I accompanied my late father Trevor Foster MBE who became a legend at Bradford Northern/Bulls having served the club as a player, coach, director, fundraiser and timekeeper over a period of 67 years. He also captained Wales RL and played for Great Britain. as an "Indomitable".

Anyway on a beautiful sunny afternoon I saw the great Welsh winger Billy Boston of Wigan fame score a sensational long distance try, using pace and strength he swerved in a long arch around defending players as the 80,000 crowd cheered and almost lifted the stand roof off.

My dad said Billy was the greatest winger he had ever seen and I never missed another RL Championship Final for the next 25 years.

I was well and truly hooked on rugby league that day for its sheer excitement!
