John Hodkinson: the 1960's matchday experience at St. Helens

My earliest memory is of standing on the terraces at Knowsley Road in the early 1960's and smelling the winter green from the players as they got closer on the pitch. The noise of the crowd, the floodlights on dark nights, and the smell of winter green all added up to create the unique atmosphere. When play got under way the steam rising from the players as the damp mud clung to their kits made the scene somewhat surreal.
