Stuart Charmak, Headingley Rugby Voices: 1968 Challenge Cup semi-final and Final

We didn’t go to many away games, but made an exception for the Challenge Cup semi-final against Wigan at Swinton in ’68.

We absolutely took them apart and I remember coming away from the ground with a huge grin and my father saying, ‘that should have been the final, it was a truly great game’.

Of course we then went to what became the Watersplash Final and witnessed aquaplaning rather than rugby, which all came down to Don Fox’s last-gasp kick by the posts to win it for Wakefield.

Neither my brother or father could watch, they both had their heads in their hands hiding their eyes, so it was left for me to do the Eddie Waring bit - ‘He’s missed it, he’s missed it!’

I seem to recall that we collected the trophy and paraded it on our lap of honour with Trinity’s ribbons still on it because the dignitaries didn’t have time to change them again.

They’d already swapped them over several times during the dramatic last few minutes.
