Ernest Thompson: Brian Bevan

My first sighting of the Warrington winger Brian Bevan was at Headingley, Leeds in the early 1950's. I was a teenager and this Australian born winger seemed to me to be about 7 stone, 5'6" in height and about 45 years of age.

I and other fans were ready to ridicule him until he received the ball and beat several opponents with his weaving, speed and total unforgettable wingers superiority.

Quite simply he was the finest winger the sport has ever produced, and no winger since has approached his immaculate play.

Comment added by Phil Gatley, December 14 2012: A lovely memory Ernest. I saw Brian Bevan in a testimonial at Wilderspool in the 70s. Although he was in his 50s he was still a really quick runner. Once he had hold of the ball there was not getting it off him. His Welsh namesake John Bevan was also a brilliant winger and I'm sure he played in the same match. Wonderful memories of the world's best game.
