John Simcock: Brian Bevan

I was sitting on the crush barrier in the Main stand at Wilderspool where I had been placed by my Dad so I could get a better view. The crowd around me were moaning as a skinny player with a bald head and bandages on his knees, looking like he should have retired years ago, received the ball and ran parallel to the opposition's line heading for the far touch line.

"Where does he think he's going ? Not the player he was that man "said the bloke at the side of me.

All of the sudden everyone was on their feet cheering as this player suddenly spotted what must have been a very minute gap in the opposition defence and was now speeding towards the try line. No one could get anywhere near him.

WHAT A TRY !!! That player?

Who else but the genius BRIAN BEVAN !

I was 6 years of age then and am 62 now but though I have many cherished memories of watching the Mighty Wire this is the one I most readily bring to mind.

A special moment in time for me...

John Simcock
