I remember going to a midweek game against Workington at Derwent Park in August 1978. I took the afternoon off work to go to the game as it was an early kick off due to Workington having no floodlights in those days. A colleague of mine at work in Widnes who was a member of a local pigeon racing club asked me if I would do him a favour. A stray pigeon from Seaton in Cumbria had somehow ended up in Widnes. If I took the bird up to Workington with me and let it free there it would be able to find its way home. I agreed to do so and travelled on the Supporters’ Club coach with the bird in a cardboard box with holes punched in the top to allow it to breathe. Once we had arrived at the ground I started to open the box in order to let the pigeon fly free. As I was doing so a queue started to form in front of me thinking I was a programme seller. Imagine their surprise when I opened the box and the pigeon flew out!
To cap it all Warrington won either 13-10 or 13-8 thanks to the trusty boot of Steve Hesford.
