Steve Dickinson: 1972, my first match

As an 8 year old child in 1972 playing at the back of the railway on St Mary's Street in Latchford, Warrington with my primary school friends on a September Sunday afternoon.

Over the embankment we could hear the cheers and noise of what seemed to a small boy a very large crowd and as we were inquisitive we decided to see where it was coming from. So with no health and safety in mind we climbed up the banking and over the train tracks. We could see Wilderspool stadium in all its glory and we wanted to get closer. So we scaled the flimsy fence that was keeping us out and sneaked into the ground. At the far end we could see the old scoreboard and today's visitors were Barrow. On the pitch I remember the blue shirts with a yellow W on the breast pocket, blue shorts, blue socks.

I was transfixed. The score ended up something like 55 - 3 to the wires. I did not have a clue what was going on or even what sport it was I just knew it was MY sport and MY team. Now some 41 years later I am still a season ticket holder as are my 4 children despite us living on the edge of Barnsley in South Yorkshire.
