Paul Cullen: my first team debut

Ahead of my first team debut, I’d been away to Cornwall for a couple of weeks. I got home on the Saturday night and got a phone call from Billy Benyon to tell me a player had been injured and I was going to play against Wigan in the Locker Cup, which was always a tough and physical encounter. I’d played about half a dozen games in the A team, there was no academy or junior sides in those days, it was adult rugby league at the age of 17 or 18. My debut was at Wilderspool. Whilst it was a pre season ‘friendly’ game, it was absolutely full on.

I do remember not sleeping at all Saturday night and then the somewhat bizarre but exciting feeling of putting on the primrose and blue and playing in front of all the supporters that I’d been stood with as a fan of the club for the previous 10 years
