Mike McCarthy: a lesson from my schooldays

All throughout my career I have a remembered a short line form my 1st team coach at Sedbergh School.

I left the school in 2000 but from the age of 16-18 the line of “do the simple things well” was drilled into my thinking. Throughout my professional career I always went back to it. For example, in a game where I may have made a mistake such as a dropped ball, given a penalty away that line would always come into my head, it must have been programmed in.

I used it as tool to re-focus and make sure I wasn’t backing up a mistake up with another mistake but rather making sure my next action was a positive involvement for myself and the team.

It simply means to me to not try and over complicate anything, get your basics right and aim to be world class at the foundations of your game
