Charlie Mulraine: 1997, Gloucester v. Bath

A rugby memory that sticks in the mind was playing for Gloucester against local rivals Bath at Kingsholm back in 1997. The game was live on Sky and Bath had a star-studded side, including 12 International players like Jason Robinson, Mike Catt and Jeremy Guscott. We were doing our best to stem the tide when sadly I twisted my knee whilst turning quickly in pursuit of another Bath shirt. I knew immediately I’d damaged my cartilage and my game was over.

As I was being led off the field, I found out later that Stuart Barnes, one of the commentators and a vertically challenged man himself, said “That’s a blow for Gloucester. Mulraine has had a tidy game. He’s also the only rugby player to make me feel like Martin Bayfield, he’s an extremely short man.” I saw him many years later at the Rugby World Cup and challenged him to stand back to back with me. To add salt to the wound, he was at least an inch taller than me!
