Bristol used to call a set move from an attacking five-metre scrum down the short side with Richard Harding drawing the final man to put Alan over in the corner. It always worked like a charm. Despite teams knowing what was coming, Alan always got his try.
In one particular game, Richard decided to go for the line himself but was tackled short, lost the ball and the chance was lost.
Alan was so infuriated he went straight over to the scrum-half, who was still face down on the ground, planted his foot on his back and leaned down, shouting in his ear and pointing his finger: 'Don't you ever, EVER, do that again!' with the result that the referee gave a penalty ... against Alan for foul play against a member of his own side!
Alan's half-time talk went something along the lines of 'We're doing great, but we really ought to be getting the ball out wide', cue an outbreak of sniggering from Simon Hogg.
'What are you laughing at?'
'We've decided to form the Alan Morley Try Prevention Society and we're not going to give you the ball!'
And they didn't!
