Neil Highfield: Paul Ringer - as a singer

In the early 70s, Leicester 1st and 2nd XV had been playing in Bath and stopped for a drink in Tewkesbury on the way back.

We went into a local pub and started singing.

It was a great evening until a large number of bikers entered the premises and put the juke box on.

Flanker Paul Ringer, who was a tremendous singer, went and asked the landlord if we could have it off.

The landlord replied that they were regulars and always played the box.

Paul said that he understood and quietly sipped his pint. Suddenly the music stopped so Paul started singing only for another record to blast out. This happened three or four times and Paul's frustration was beginning to show. Eventually there was a period of silence so Paul walked across the bar, pulled the plug from its socket, put it in his pocket and with a big smile on his face began to sing. Suddenly much to his amazement another record started to blast across the room. He had pulled the plug off the fruit machine!
