During the war we had a coalman, Douglas, who was a friend of my fathers.
He was such a gentle man to talk to but his strength was phenomenal. His idea of delivering coal was to pick a hundred weight bag of coal in each hand and walk in with them, and he would stand there talking to you as if they didn’t weigh a thing. He never really mentioned that he was a rugby player. It was my father who told me he was the great Douglas Clark.
My first match at Fartown was Christmas or Boxing Day 1946 ... my biggest impression was this cloud of tobacco, of smoke, all over the stand.
