I remember the first really big match I saw at Fartown. It was the first time they’d played on a Sunday and they weren’t allowed to charge to get in, but because it was a Sunday the police wouldn’t be there. It was quite a big gate and I remember people getting over the fence because there were no police and somebody selling them programmes in lieu of their entrance fee as they dropped down the other side. That always amused me.
The first game against Australia really took my breath away. Up to then I really had no inkling about rugby league and seeing that one game just hooked me and has kept me hooked ever since. I still go down there but, standing on the big terrace at Fartown watching Huddersfield play Australia is an abiding memory.
